Early June update
Sorry I have not updated lately. I wish I could say it was because I was busy turning my backyard into a wonder-land of horticultural delight… While I have been working on the landscaping, it does not qualify as a delight – yet.
Tonight I further enlarged a planting bed in the front of the house. Based on the number of large roots I went through I think there might have been a tree growing there in the recent past. The other alternative is that the jumbo shrub we cut down last year soon after I bought the house had an extra large root system. I also mowed the yard although there is less and less of that everyday.
As you will see in the photo below, the cabinet-maker delivered the final batch of things I had ordered. In addition to the bedside table (it had to be made to fit the bed which is taller than normal plus it has the drawers so the table is shaped like a blocky “C”), he also made built-in shelves for the first floor study/bedroom, a hutch of the east end of the dining room, and a shelf for a TV above the kitchen/living room “door”. Everything looks quite nice. Once I get stuff arranged into the others I will take some more photos.
A couple of weekends ago I drove up to Chicago for the day to do some quick Ikea shopping. The main thing I went for was curtains for the front bedrooms. I am in the middle of installing those but the walls are not cooperating – in some places the drywall is to close to the brick to use the typical drywall anchors and I have not figured out how to get around that. Drilling into the brick and using a screw for brick did not work the best except to piss me off enough to stop working on the curtain hanging for awhile.
I did find some bamboo of the right species to plant in some large pots in the backyard to act (hopefully) as a screen that is taller than the fence. The pots are positioned at the side of the deck closest to the neighbors and are merrily growing along. I don’t know if they will get big enough this year but I am giving them as much Miracle Grow as they want.
Anyway, hopefully I will be better about updating over the next few weeks and hopefully I also get stuff done around the house.
